📱 File Format

What Is a HEIC File Format?

Understanding the image format your iPhone uses by default — and why it matters.

📝

HEIC Full Form

HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It's the file extension used by Apple for photos taken on iOS devices since iOS 11.

🍎

Apple Image Format

Apple adopted HEIC as the default photo format for iPhones in 2017, replacing the long-standing JPG format for better efficiency.

📦

High Efficiency Compression

HEIC uses HEVC (H.265) video codec technology to compress images, achieving the same visual quality as JPG at roughly half the file size.

💾

Better Storage Optimization

A typical HEIC file is 40–50% smaller than an equivalent JPG. On a 64GB iPhone, this can save thousands of additional photos.

📱

iPhone Photo Format

Every photo you take on an iPhone running iOS 11 or later is saved as HEIC by default — unless you manually change the setting in Camera settings.

🔄 Why Convert

Why Convert HEIC Images to JPG?

While HEIC is efficient, JPG remains the universal standard — here's why conversion matters.

🌐

JPG Compatibility

JPG is supported by virtually every device, operating system, and application ever made. HEIC support is still limited outside Apple's ecosystem.

📤

Easy Sharing

When you share HEIC photos with Android users or upload to many websites, they often can't open them. JPG ensures everyone can view your images.

🖥️

Better Browser Support

Most web browsers display JPG images natively. HEIC support in browsers is still inconsistent — JPG guarantees your images load everywhere.

📲

Works on All Devices

Windows PCs, Android phones, smart TVs, and older devices all handle JPG perfectly. HEIC often requires third-party software or codecs.

🎨

Supported by Most Apps

Photo editors, social media platforms, document tools, and email clients all accept JPG. Many still don't support HEIC uploads.

❓ FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about HEIC files and our converter.

What is a HEIC file?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format introduced in iOS 11. It uses HEVC compression to store images at roughly half the size of JPG while maintaining the same visual quality. Every iPhone photo you take is likely a HEIC file unless you changed your camera settings.
Why can't I open HEIC files on my Windows PC?
Windows doesn't natively support HEIC without additional codecs. Windows 10 and 11 can open HEIC files if you install the "HEIF Image Extensions" and "HEVC Video Extensions" from the Microsoft Store — but the latter costs $0.99. Converting to JPG avoids this hassle entirely.
Does this converter upload my photos to a server?
No. All conversion happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your HEIC files never leave your device. We don't store, scan, or have access to your images at any point during the process.
Will I lose quality when converting HEIC to JPG?
JPG uses lossy compression, so there is a minor quality reduction compared to the original HEIC. However, at our default 90% quality setting, the difference is virtually invisible to the human eye. You can adjust the quality slider up to 100% for maximum fidelity.
Is this HEIC to JPG converter free?
Yes, 100% free with no sign-up, no subscription, no watermarks, and no hidden charges. Convert as many HEIC images as you need without paying anything.
Can I convert multiple HEIC files at once?
Currently, the converter processes one file at a time for the best quality control. However, there's no limit on how many conversions you can do — simply convert one, download it, and upload the next. Batch support may be added in a future update.
What's the difference between HEIC and HEIF?
HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) is the actual image format, while HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the file extension/container used by Apple. In practice, they refer to the same thing — HEIC files use the HEIF format. Our converter supports both .heic and .heif files.
Does it work on my iPhone or Android phone?
Yes! The converter is fully responsive and works on any modern mobile browser — Safari on iPhone, Chrome on Android, and others. Simply open this page on your phone, upload your HEIC file, and convert it directly on your device.
Why does the converted JPG have a white background?
HEIC files can contain transparency (alpha channel), but JPG does not support transparency. When the "Fill Transparent Background" option is enabled, any transparent areas are filled with white. You can uncheck this option, but transparent areas may appear black in some viewers.
How do I change my iPhone to save photos as JPG instead of HEIC?
Go to Settings → Camera → Formats and select "Most Compatible" instead of "High Efficiency." This makes your iPhone save new photos as JPG. However, this won't convert existing HEIC photos — you'll still need a converter like this one for those.
